Psychiatry
Portage Path has more psychiatrists on staff than any other outpatient provider in the Akron area. Our doctors come from some of the most respected programs in the country, and are trained to help patients get the most benefit from their medication.
What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is different from counseling primarily in that psychiatrists deal with the medical aspects of mental health and prescribe medications to help patients manage symptoms and feel better, while counselors can spend more time with clients working to help them learn why they feel the way they feel, and to find solutions.
Quality is assured.
The services and facilities at Portage Path are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). JCAHO is a nationally-recognized organization that conducts strict evaluations of healthcare providers, including hospitals, making sure that only the best receive accreditation.
What else should I know?
All psychiatry services provided by Portage Path are completely confidential. Information is released only with the written consent of the patient or when required by law.
Medication-only Patients
We are able to accept medication-only patients who are receiving therapy at an outside location. Contact us for more information.

Medication Management
The advancements in medications related to mental health and well-being have been unbelievable over the past decade. Many of these medications allow people to live fuller and richer lives, with the ability to enjoy aspects of life they never could before; however, it is important to understand that in most cases, a behavioral health issue cannot be "fixed" simply by taking a pill. Common illnesses like depression and anxiety can be helped by medication, but the issues that lead to the problem often require therapy to resolve.
The Medication Clinic
In our Akron Outpatient facility, we have initiated a unique way to help patients manage their day-to-day medication needs - our new Medication Clinic. This clinic utilizes the talents of Advanced Practice Nurses - nurses who have additional training and limited prescribing privileges - to help patients obtain refills, answer questions about their medications, and check for problems with medications.
